Technology stocks led the market to its strongest performance in more than a week yesterday as investors hunted for bargains among shares that have been beaten down in recent sessions.

At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 115.88 at 10,979.04. The blue-chip index rose as much as 168 points during the session, rebounding strongly from Monday's 47.80 point loss.

The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 15.10 to 1,362.86, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 60.50 to 2,679.69.

NYSE volume totalled 714.65 million shares at the close against 611.20 million in the previous session. The NYSE composite index rose 4.79 to 640.69, and the American Stock Exchange composite index rose 1.83 to 792.62.
