The prospect of a resolution to the presidential election dispute sent the Dow industrials sharply higher yesterday, but investors were more restrained about high-tech companies amid lingering earnings concerns.

The Dow Jones industrial average soared 187.41 to close at 10,560.95.

Broader indicators were mixed. The Nasdaq composite index, which ended last week down 9%, fell 29.54 to 2,616.75.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.74 to 1,324.97.
