Shares of major computer makers rose sharply on Wall Street yesterday, but the broader stock market held to slim gains, with investors making few bets while they awaited the government's consumer price report.
At the close of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 73.14 points - or 0.7 per cent - at 11,046.79. It was the Dow's first close above 11,000 since July 21st.
Broader stock indicators ended slightly higher. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 3.09 to 1,330.77, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 7.43 to 2,645.24.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 10-to-9 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,553 up, 1,425 down and 553 unchanged. NYSE volume totalled 576.99 million shares, against 689.96 million in the previous session.
