The Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs has published an information booklet for carers entitled "Carers' Allowance - Keeping You Informed".

The information booklet has been issued this week to the more than 16,000 people who are in receipt of the Carers' Allowance.

It highlights the main social welfare and other entitlements that are available to people receiving the allowance and for those in their care. In addition, the booklet contains information about the employment and educational support measures introduced by the Government and a range of services provided by other agencies. Speaking at the launch of the booklet this week, the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs, Mr Ahern, said that he recognised there was a need for an active approach in getting information to people on an ongoing basis and not just when they needed State services.

There is a freephone number available today and next week for anyone wishing to make enquiries about social welfare for carers. The number is 1800 201 236 and the lines are open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
