The case of Irish investment broker, Mr Tony Taylor, has been adjourned to January 12th, 2001 after his English-based solicitors withdrew from his defence. Mr Paul McDermott SC, currently for Mr Taylor (53), formerly of Anglesea Road in Dublin, told Judge Elizabeth Dunne at Dublin Circuit Criminal that they discharged themselves from the case because of complications they have with the legal scheme in this jurisdiction.

Mr McDermott said Mr Taylor was very appreciative of the way Ms June McGivern has represented him but she wished to be paid and that created difficulties after Mr Taylor was granted legal aid following numerous applications in the Dublin District Courts.

Mr Taylor faces several charges relating to the fraudulent conversion of £620,000 (€787,801) under false pretences. In total, £2 million of investor funds is unaccounted for. He was arrested on foot of 15 extradition warrants in London in August 1999 having been in hiding there for three years.

Judge Dunne adjourned the case so that his new solicitors, Garrett Sheehan & Co, could take instructions in the case.
