The two vices of smoking and drinking took a beating this year with new laws introduced to regulate their price or public display. Packs of 20 cigarettes now cost 50p more thanks to Mr McCreevy's Budget. The changes took effect immediately following his speech on December 1st.
Earlier this year, publicans were required to display prices outside or immediately inside the entrance to their premises. Notices must also be visibly posted where different prices are charged in different parts of the premises - in a pub or lounge for example.
According to Consumer Watch, the newsletter of the European Consumer Centre, the Price Display Order includes bottled water, wine, gin and a carbonated beverage reflecting changes in drinking habits in the Republic over more than 20 years. In 1998, the Director of Consumer Affairs prosecuted 18 publicans for breaching the 1976 Order, which has now been revoked.
