Compaq Computer, the world's largest personal computer maker, has posted a 21.7 per cent rise in third-quarter net profit, slightly higher than analysts' lowered expectations, but revenue growth was soft after a 16 per cent drop in commercial PC sales.

The Houston, Texas-based company, which employs 2,200 people in Ireland, remained the No. 1 ranked PC maker in terms of units shipped worldwide.
