Motorola's operations in Cork may escape further job cuts, the company has announced. A further 4,000 jobs are to be cut globally, in addition to the 26,000 job losses announced earlier in the year. So far, more than 24,000 job cuts have been made in Motorola's global workforce, including 750 in Swords, Co Dublin, with the remaining job losses likely to come before the end of the year.
Outlining details of the company's second-quarter earnings, chief operating officer Mr Bob Growney said the job cuts, combined with other cost reduction measures, would save the company $1.8 billion (€2.1 billion) for the year.
But an IDA spokesman said that it had not received any word from the multinational about possible job cuts in Ireland.
Motorola employs 300 people at its Cork-based European Software Centre, the bulk of whom are software engineers. The remainder are employed in its semiconductor centre in Cork.
