Gas produced in the west should be used to promote industry in the region, the Minister for the Marine, Mr Fahey, said last night.

Referring to the Corrib development off Co Mayo, which is being developed by Enterprise Oil, Statoil and Marathon Petroleum, Mr Fahey said: "The location of the field presents a timely opportunity to spread the benefits of gas-based energy supply to the west and northwest."
