The death has taken place of a former Bank of Ireland chief executive, Mr Ian Morrison (75).

The death has taken place of a former Bank of Ireland chief executive, Mr Ian Morrison (75).

Mr Morrison was the bank's chief executive from 1966 to 1983 and had been a director since 1962. He was a prominent business figure and served as a director of a number of Ireland's leading companies.

He was a partner at Peter Morrison & Co which later became part of Coopers & Lybrand and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was chairman of Goodman International, Smith & Nephew (Ireland) and of Irish Glass and was deputy chairman of PJ Carroll.

He was a director of Cadburys (Ireland) and of the Central Bank of Ireland.

Mr Morrison had lectured in accountancy at UCD, was president of the Institute of Banking Studies - Europe and was chairman and president of the Irish Management Institute.

He was awarded a doctorate of business administration (honoris causa) in 2000 and was a fellow of the International Academy of Management and a life member of the Irish Management Institute.

Mr Morrison was born in Dublin and had studied at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and the Harvard Business School.

He married Ms June Nesbitt in 1953 and was widowed in 1982. He married Ms Sheila Higginbotham in 1986.

He had two children from his first marriage and had four grandchildren.
