Position: Outgoing chairman of IDA Ireland and head of group corporate development at Bank of Ireland.

Background: Born in Sutton, Co Dublin, he was educated at Castleknock College, Dublin, and studied law and commerce at UCD, finally opting for commerce.

On graduation in 1966, he joined Shell International and worked in Britain and - during the civil war there - in Nigeria. In 1968, he joined Honeywell Computers. In 1970, he was appointed marketing manager of Cara Data Processing and in 1973 became managing director. He became senior vice-president, North America, for Aer Lingus in 1975. In 1981, he became general manager (ancillary services) for Aer Lingus and in 1986 chief executive (ancillary services), with full responsibility for all Aer Lingus's diversified activities.

He was a director of GPA Group from 1986 to 1991. In 1990, he joined P J Carroll & Co as managing director and left, having restructured and integrated the company into the Rothmans organisation in 1991. He is a member of the board of the UCD Graduate School of Business.

Why he's in the news: He retires at the end of the month as chairman of IDA Ireland.

Family: He lives in Sutton with his wife Anne. They have three children, Mark, who has just completed a business studies degree at DIT, Nicola who is studying PE and teaching at Brunel University in London and James, who is still at school.
