The Derry-based North-West Centre for Learning and Development plans to deliver Microsoft-approved courses in its catchment area. The decision follows lengthy discussions with Microsoft and a community group based in Ballymun, Dublin, which has successfully completed a similar programme with local unemployed people. Microsoft has accredited the centre as one of its designated training locations. Students will study for the Microsoft Certified Professional qualification, which is an industry-recognised standard offering opportunities for a career in computing. It is also considered to be a good technical foundation for longer-term study in computing.

In 1997, the Ballymun Tramlines course led to full-time employment in the computer industry for all 25 trainees. Trainers from Tramlines have already spent some time in Derry training the North-West Centre's staff to deliver the Microsoft curriculum and offering advice and assistance in setting up the model.
