Europe's telecommunications sector was rocked yesterday by reports that Deutsche Telekom and Telecom Italia were negotiating what would be the largest merger ever.

According to reports, Europe's largest phone company is ready to join with the Italian group to create a new telecommunications giant valued at more than $200 billion (€187 billion), heading off Olivetti's hostile bid for Telecom Italia.
