The three executive directors of the EBS - chief executive Mr Ted McGovern, finance director Mr John Cullen, and secretary and director Mr Joe Ryan - got an average 20 per cent pay rise in 2003.

They shared total remuneration of 1.32 million in 2003 compared with 1.1 million in the previous year.

Mr McGovern earned 588,700, up 15 per cent on the 512,800 he was paid in the previous year.

His package included a salary of 319,500, a 123,300 bonus, a €123,300 payment under its medium-term incentive scheme plus benefits worth 22,600.

Mr Cullen earned 358,000, up 21 per cent on the 296,800 he received in the previous year.

Mr Ryan was paid 373,200, up 28 per cent on the 291,600 he received in 2002.

The society's non-executive directors shared fees of €375,000 up from 270,500 in 2002.

EBS chairman Mr Brian Joyce earned 85,000 while vice-chairman Mr Ron Bolger was paid 62,000.

The others earned an average of 36,000 which will increase to 38,000 in 2004.

One of these directors, Ms Barbara Patten, who was voted onto the board by members, said the directors, on average, would spend five days a month working for the EBS.
