AROUND 300 jobs could be created by the development of Northern Ireland's first all-in-one discount shopping, crafts and leisure centre.

The focal point of the project is the 200-year-old Gilford Mill, in Gilford, Co Down, which is to be developed by a group of local overseas investors at a cost of Pounds 6.3 million.

The scheme is based on similar concepts in the United States, where manufacturers based in "outlet villages" sell high quality branded goods direct to the public at up to 50 per cent below normal retail prices.

Such villages are said to account for 5 per cent of US retail turnover.

It is hoped that the Gilford Mill development will open late next year.
