Retail sales in the Dublin area will rise by approximately 5 per cent over the Christmas period compared to last year, with many traders expecting to benefit from the "Luas dividend", the Dublin Chamber of Commerce (DCC) has predicted, reports John Downes
Speaking yesterday at its annual Christmas lunch in Dublin, DCC president Mr David Pierce said sales of housewares and electrical items are expected to perform particularly strongly this Christmas.
"Our research suggests that shopping to the value of €3.7 billion can be anticipated in the wider Dublin region over the December/January period, of which approximately €2.5 billion will be spent in the city centre," he said. "Household items have proved a very strong seller throughout the year as a result of the continuing boom in the residential property market."
"Retailers are generally very positive about the prospects for the Christmas retail season.
"They expect to benefit from the 'Luas dividend' as shoppers are attracted back into the city centre."
