UCG, the hosts and holders, and UCD were the biggest casualties on the opening day of the Collingwood Cup in Dangan yesterday. UCG were beaten 2-1 by Dublin University while UCD went down 2-0 to University of Ulster Coleraine.

Paul O'Malley headed Trinity into the lead after six minutes. UCG captain Sean O'Neill equalised in the 61st minute with a header from close range but Trinity captain Barry Fanning had the final say with the winner in the 67th minute.

In the other Group One match UCC beat Queen's 2-0, the goals coming from David Grainger in the 61st minute and Mick O'Connor just on full time.

UU Coleraine caused a surprise when they defeated UCD in Group Four. Coleraine took the lead in the 36th minute from the penalty spot when Niall Malone was brought down by Ray Leneghan. Andy Coulter struck home the penalty. The second goal came in the 75th minute when Ciaran Doherty played a long ball into the path of Jason McDermott who scored from close range.

In Group Three, St Mary's, Belfast drew 1-1 with University Limerick. James Slater scoredafter seven minutes and Kieran O'Rourke equalised in the 40th minute.

In Group Two, Dublin City University lost 3-0 to University of Ulster Jordanstown whose goals came in the last 20 minutes from Pat Cavanagh, Darren Parker, who plays with Glentoran, and Barry Forshaw.
