EirGrid is pushing ahead with its study of a new electricity interconnector between Ireland and France.

It also expects to submit a planning application for its North-South interconnector at the end of this year or early next year, according to chief executive Fintan Slye.

Both developments have been designated as projects of common interest by the EU Commission, meaning they see them as priority projects with significant benefits for two states.

EirGrid says new studies show the potential benefit of the new link to France, while the North-South link is seen as having significant energy benefits for the North.
