The National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) in Cork has announced six environmental research projects following a £2.7 million (€3.43 million) allocation from the European Commission. This is part of an overall package of £5.6 million, making the NMRC the largest single recipient of funding in the State under the Commission's Framework 5 programme.
The projects will explore cleaner approaches to semiconductor manufacturing, improved monitoring of contaminated sites using sensor technologies, environmentally friendly plating in the electronics industry, and recycling and waste reduction of microelectronics packages.
