Turmoil in the markets and ever less encouraging signals on the economic front will not be the stuff to cheer EU leaders as they gather in Seville at the end of the week to address, among other things, the Taoiseach's request for a declaration to ease the path of the Nice treaty.
A day earlier, finance ministers come together to address the need for budgetary stability, now that the french parliamentary elections are safely out of the way.
Ahead of those meetings, economic data will be the focal point with markets looking for some signal in US and EU inflation figures to put a floor underneath their respective markets.
On the corporate front, Gresham Hotels holds an annual general meeting where the main subject of interest will be the stakebuilding in the group by Israel's Red Sea group and its demand for boardroom changes. Further from home, many of the top names in the US investment banking industry report second-quarter figures.
Attention will focus on the accompanying post-Spitzer commentary about reform on brokerage research operations and also about the impact on the industry of the growing list of US corporate scandals.
