Having hung up his rugby boots three years ago, former Munster lionheart Mick Galwey appears to be carving out a successful business career for himself.

The former Shannon, Munster, Ireland and Lions forward has just been appointed by Dublin-based Ashcoin as a director of the company.

Little known in general industry, Ashcoin is responsible for the internal fixtures and fittings in commercial buildings and offices. Clients have included Vodafone, Dunnes Stores and BT.

It employs about 235 staff and has turnover of €30 million, double the level of two years ago. It plans to repeat the trick by 2010.

Galwey, who also won a Sam Maguire medal with his native Kerry in 1986 and was a teak-tough rugby player, has worked for Ashcoin since 2004 and becomes its business development director.

Galwey is actually a baker by trade. Ashcoin will no doubt be hoping he can make dough of an altogether different variety from here on in.
