Fine Gael has introduced a Private Members' Bill aimed at allowing a fairer distribution of free shares in any forthcoming flotation by a building society. The proposed legislation is directed at joint account or policy holders.

Under the current building society legislation, free shares are issued to the person whose name appears first on that account. In some instances this has lead to investors missing out on their free share windfall.
