Barclaycard and Cellnet have launched the world's first trial of mobile electronic cash machines. Under the new scheme the trial participants can download electronic cash over Cellnet's GSM network onto their Barclaycard by inserting it into a specially designed Motorola StarTAC mobile phone. The card can be used for low-value purchases as part of the Visa Cash UK trial in Leeds, which currently has 60,000 participating customers.
The Visa Cash card differs from traditional smart cards because it carries an embedded computer chip capable of storing up to £50 (€63.49) of cash electronically. It is designed for purchasing things like newspapers and sweets.
