Flogas Natural Gas Ltd has won the sole franchise rights for the supply of natural gas to domestic customers in Galway, Athlone, Ballinasloe, Tullamore and Mullingar.
It is the first such franchise to be given for the supply of gas to domestic customers.
The franchise involves approximately 8,000 customers. Assuming an average annual bill of approximately €650, there would be an annual turnover of approximately €5.2 million.
The Commission for Energy Regulation selected Flogas following a competition that generated five expressions of interest. The competition was based on service and price levels.
Domestic customers in the areas concerned will transfer from Bord Gáis Éireann to Flogas on August 5th.
The customers involved are new or very recent customers for the gas network. Flogas is receiving the gas from Bord Gáis at below market rates.
Flogas Natural Gas is eligible to compete for commercial and industrial customers, who are currently entitled to choose any licenced natural gas supplier. Its ultimate parent is DCC plc.
