Forfas and the IDA now own 48 acres around Dublin airport and are talking to industrialists about locating new projects on the site at Swords Business Park.

However, developing further lands in north Dublin to create jobs is severely restricted because of lack of services, according to a new report.

The report by a task force which was set up three years ago to identify new employment opportunities based around Dublin airport recommends that an enterprise centre be established in Swords.

However, it says that while Forbairt has discussed this matter with Swords Chamber of Commerce, neither the Chamber nor any other community group has submitted firm proposals to date.

The report, released yesterday, but completed last year, makes four main recommendations. It says lands zoned for industrial use in the Swords area should be developed and advance factories provided on those lands. Two advance factories of 25,000 sq ft and 42,000 sq ft respectively are being built by developers at the business park. Planning permission is also being sought from Fingal County Council by another private developer who wants to build a 25,000 sq ft advance factory.

A one acre and a three acre site have been sold for greenfield projects.

In a statement accompanying the report, Enterprise and Employment Minister, Mr Bruton, said these advance factories would be marketed by IDA Ireland which is currently taking to a number of industrialists about locating projects on the lands.

The report also recommends that a pilot training/technical training school be established at Gormanstown. Mr Bruton said it was a matter for the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications.

Mr Bruton said several projects had been approved for the area in the last 18 months, including expansions of existing businesses.
