German blue-chip shares headed back down to end in negative territory yesterday, following a mixed morning, as traders said trade was thin and the market was still settling from last week's moves higher.

"We are still experiencing a return from the move up we saw last week which was mainly provoked by the banks and so the market is still rebounding," a dealer said.

As widely expected, shares rebounded yesterday but ended off their best as an initially hopeful view that the Asia crisis may be contained was undermined by US data and renewed pockets of doubt.

Dollar strength also supported an initially upbeat if thin bourse, but stronger-than-expected US data knocked the index off.

Italian shares ended firmer as Wall Street held early gains on Monday but were slightly off session highs in technical trade ahead of Friday's futures and options expiry.
