German shares rose by more than 0.5 of a per cent yesterday, with floor trading closing with healthy gains before Wall Street began. Dealings on the computerised index fell because of the poor start on Wall Street and the weaker dollar. Dealers said volume was weak.

Paris CAC-40: 2,795.87 (-12.65)

There was volatile trade in French shares yesterday, with the bluechip CAC-40 index initially shooting up on a wave of optimism about the EU summit in Amsterdam. But the mood changed in late morning and stocks went into reverse, barely staying in the plus column, as investors were hit by a sudden bout of nerves about the gathering
