Frankfurt Dax: 4,122.72 (+30.95) German shares reached new daily highs in post-Bourse trading. But the market is still digesting the drop in the deutschmark after newspaper reports that Bundesbank president Dr Hans Tietmeyer thinks depreciation is not right for Germany.

Paris CAC: 3,023.77 (+26.54) The Paris Bourse chalked up a rise of 0.89 per cent on the day, closing above the 3,000 level. Shares were helped by a buoyant start in Wall Street and gains in futures.

Total volume on the CAC 40 was 8.8 billion francs. "People suddenly turned quite bullish," one dealer said, adding that he expected the market to rise further.

Milan Mibtel: 15,919 (+ 151) In Italy shares extended their rally, led by gains in telecommunications and bank shares.

The Mibtel closed up 0.96 of a percentage point. Oil and gas company, ENI, ended 1 per cent higher at 10,999 lire before the announcement of first-half results.
