German shares recouped most of their lost ground in after-hours trading to close mildly weaker despite early losses on Wall Street and buoyed by a firmer dollar.

Dealers see further gains from the underlying bullish sentiment but resistance may be met at a DAX of 5800.

The market will also be focusing on today's congress testimony by US Federal Reserve chairman, Mr Alan Greenspan.

French shares closed fractionally lower, supported by the firmer dollar and covering of short positions.

Dealers said that the market was showing resilience at the closing level but trading remained very thin.

One dealer said the only calls he had received were offers of World Cup tickets.

Italian shares closed near the day's lows as the American market got off to a weak start.

Volumes were thin as investors sat on the sidelines waiting for the Greenspan testimony today.
