The Frankfurt stock market climbed to its fifth straight record closing high as the DAX 30 index gained 0.20 per cent to end the official trading session at 3104. 14 points. Traders said the latest gain was due to the dollar's strength and a firm German bond market. A firm dollar helps the stock market because it translates into higher export earnings when dollars are converted into marks.

French stocks reversed their early losses and rallied to a second consecutive record close after shrugging off Wednesday's weakness on Wall Street. "The bourse is ignoring bad news and has disconnected itself from Wall Street. It's trying to catch up relative to Frankfurt and London by finding new sources of inspiration in corporate results," a trader said.
