Although German shares were weaker on the day, they were practically unchanged in late afternoon electronic trading. This was supported by the strength of the dollar against the mark and a higher opening on Wall Street.
Paris CAC-40: 2,124.44 (+17.39)
French shares closed sharply higher as September futures expired in a bullish mood helped by an early rise in the Dow Jones index.
Eurotunnel shares were suspended yet again. The suspension was again at the company's request as talks between the channel tunnel operator and its creditor banks went down to the wire. Eurotunnel is seeking to refinance 14 billion (£10.6 billion) of debt.
Milan Mibtel: 10176 (+22)
Italian shares opened mostly lower as investors reassessed the impact of the Government's uncompromising "budget for Europe" in preparation for EMU. The index ended up marginally higher.
