Dame Anita Roddick, the founder of the Body Shop, yesterday launched Amnesty International's fundraising appeal for a new human rights action centre in Dublin city. Caroline Maddenreports.
Dame Anita, who is known for her strong stance on corporate social responsibility, contributed €500,000 in support of the centre and urged others to donate and help Amnesty reach its €3 million target.
"I know that the work done there will save lives," Dame Anita said at the launch.
The human rights action centre will be used for training and education. It will also house a conference centre with capacity for 100 people, as well as an action and resources centre which will enable people to react immediately to human rights violations.
"This project is about more than a building, it's about increasing Amnesty International's ability to realise human rights by delivering high-impact campaigns that change the lives of real people," said Colm Ó Cuanacháin, secretary general of Amnesty's Irish division.
