German shares finished slightly weaker weighed by small losses on Wall Street, after at one point recovering nearly all the day's losses. Dealers said trade saw a continuation of the previous day's consolidation after German shares hurdled the key 4000 point level and ended nearly 4 percent stronger on Monday. The Xetra DAX, reflecting all-day computer trade, finished at 4074.55 points, having touched a day's high of 4117.28.

Paris CAC-40: 2902.35 (-10.74)

French shares ended lower after an indecisive day's trading, with the CAC index clinging to 2,900. The market was looking to consolidate before staging an attack back to the psychologically important 3000 level, traders said.

Milan MIBTEL: 15584 (-8)

Italian shares closed virtually unchanged after Wall Street opened lower with a fall by ENI also impacting on the index. ENI fell 2.6 per cent on a downgrade by J.P. Morgan due to the increase in OPEC quotas.
