The US Senate last night confirmed Mr Alan Greenspan to a third four year term as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

Mr Greenspan is highly regarded on Wall Street for his handling of the sensitive central bank post over a volatile period, including the 1987 stock market crash and the 1991 Gulf War.
