ESAT Digifone, the company which received the licence for the second mobile phone network, has urged the Minister for the Environment, Mr Howlin, to publish new planning guidelines governing the erection of mobile phone masts.
Speaking in Limerick, where the company's new National Customer Care Centre is to be located, Mr Barry Maloney, joint chief executive, appealed to the Minister to publish the guidelines.
He said a draft was issued last December but, despite pressure from a variety of interested groups, nothing further has materialised. He asked the Minister to make the guidelines available to planning authorities, as many planners have requested final guidelines before considering applications.
He said. "Esat Digifone is confident that its planning applications will be successful once the guidelines are released."
He said the company was recruiting 100 people for the Customer Care Centre to be based in the Plassey Technological Park on Limerick's university campus.
