Vodafone launches 3G Blackberry
The new 3G Blackberry, the 8707v, was launched in Ireland yesterday by Vodafone Ireland and Research in Motion, enabling customers to more easily view Word, PDF, PowerPoint, and other attachments.
While existing Blackberries have this technical capability, the speed of 3G allows attachments sent to the 8707v to be downloaded in seconds.
Combined with Vodafone's UMTS network, the new Blackberry makes it possible to make calls and simultaneously send or receive e-mails, browse the internet or use other applications.
Internet hub's members rise 50%
INEX, Ireland's IP hub, said membership rose a record 50 per cent in the first half of this year after 11 new members joined, making INEX one of the fastest-growing internet exchanges in Europe.
The hub, which provides IP peering facilities, now has six associate members and 24 full members, including VistaTec, a software localisation organisation set to begin peering at the exchange.
Hosting365 boosts broadband service
Hosting365, the country's biggest hosting services provider, yesterday announced new services that will extend broadband reach in Ireland.
Together with Motorola and Azotel, the comprehensive solution will enable wireless internet service providers (WISPs) to deliver regional and metropolitan broadband services.
The solution will allow broadband operators to focus on the commercial side of their business by removing the high-end IT costs and expert knowledge base needed to build, expand and maintain broadband networks, according to John O'Hare, Azotel's managing director.
Software centre hosts research day
Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Centre, will hold a major research day at the University of Limerick on July 11th to help give businesses a local and global perspective on the software industry.
