For the first time, India's Election Commission is using electronic voting machines, in six constituencies in Delhi and five each in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for provincial polls. Election commission officials said they hoped to make greater use of the voting machines. They say similar machines are used in other countries, including the US. Before ballots are cast, voters' identities are cross-checked according to their signatures or thumbprints. If a voter presses the polling button more than once, the machine jams. If more than one button is pressed, the machine records the vote for the button that was pushed harder. The Press Trust of India quoted chief election commissioner M.S. Gill as saying that the machines were a success.
