Stock prices in New York were mostly higher yesterday as technology stocks recovered from Monday's rout but industrial companies, also changing course, fell amid profit-taking.
At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 8.02 at 10,448.55 after fluctuating between positive and negative territory throughout the session. The Dow lost 53 points Monday, ending a five-day streak of new closing highs.
The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 16.69 to 1,306.17, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 64.04 to 2,409.65.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a six-to-five margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,396 up, 1,680 down and 489 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 975.88 million shares at the close against 1.2 billion in the previous session.
The NYSE composite index rose 4.96 to 620.84, and the American Stock Exchange composite index rose 1.87 to 736.98.
