Prices were mixed on Wall Street yesterday as investors again collected profits from technology shares. But they continued to buy big industrial stocks, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average to its second consecutive closing high. At the close on Wall Street, the Dow was up 13.74 points at 10,845.45 after being up as much as 103 points earlier in the session.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a nine-to-eight margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,752 up, 1,281 down and 509 unchanged.

NYSE volume totalled 942.35 million shares at the close against 888.22 million in the previous session. The NYSE composite index fell 2.94 to 640.32, and the American Stock Exchange composite index rose 3.62 to 777.69. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 1.63 to 433.53.

Returning to a trading pattern that began last week, investors were buying the previously ignored stocks of companies whose fortunes are closely tied to the economy, in response to growing signs that the global economy is recovering.
