Intel's general manager in Ireland is taking a lead role in the completion of the company's agreement with Digital to acquire certain assets of its chip-making operation for an estimated $700 million (£466 million).

Mr Frank McCabe, who is vice-president of Intel Corporation, will serve as the overall manager for completion of the acquisition. The deal is subject to US government approval.

Digital is selling its semiconductor operations, including three facilities, to Intel while retaining its Alpha and Alpha-related semiconductor design teams to develop future versions of the microprocessor.
