The National Lottery in Britain has netted around £25 billion (€38bn) sterling since it began five years ago and around 94 per cent of adults have bought a ticket, according to figures recently released.

The average spend is £3.32 a person. However, some observers have been questioning the chances of winning a prize - estimated at around 54 to 1, and opining that maybe premium bonds are a better option.
