Jefferson Smurfit Corporation is to buy the optical scan vote tabulation business of Business Records Corporation (BRC) as part of a forced sale of the business as a result of BRC's merger with American International Systems. The US government forced the sale of the business to Smurfit's Sequoia Pacific Systems division to prevent an anti-competitive merger.

Smurfit is already involved in the manufacture of electrical voting machines and the printing of ballot papers in the US. The acquisition from BRC adds an optical scanning company to this business and means that Smurfit has a full range of businesses in the electoral market.
