Jurys seeks up to 100 Burlington job losses

Jurys Doyle Hotel Group is seeking up to 100 redundancies at one of its flagship properties, the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

Jurys Doyle Hotel Group is seeking up to 100 redundancies at one of its flagship properties, the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The redundancies will be sought on a voluntary basis from the 440 staff at the hotel, according to a statement from group chief executive Mr Pat McCann.

He said the company was entering negotiations with its staff aimed at "improving productivity, building on our competitive strengths and anticipating customer needs into the future".

Jurys Doyle wants greater flexibility from its workforce to allow it to compete in the higher end of the market. Among the issues up for discussion is the service charge of 12.5 per cent, which is levied on bills and then distributed among staff.

Industry sources claim that only five of the Burlington's peers in Dublin levy a service charge, and three of them are also Jurys Doyle hotels.

Mr Kieron Connolly, secretary of the hotel and catering branch of SIPTU, said the priority in the negotiations would be maintaining the maximum number of jobs. He said the union was prepared to discuss the service charge in the context of maintaining earnings.

The talks will not cover the group's other hotels in Dublin, including the Berkeley Court and Jurys Hotel in Ballsbridge and the Westbury off Grafton Street.

A spokesman said no decision had been taken on these hotels in the context of the ongoing strategic review at the group.

The restructuring at the Burlington is the latest stage of a strategic review of its Irish hotels, under which the company has disposed of a number of properties and embarked on the rebuilding of Jurys Hotel in Cork.
