Corporate lawyer Andrew Doyle has been appointed managing partner of the Dublin office of international law firm Maples and Calder.

A former senior partner with Matheson Ormsby Prentice solicitors, he will lead a staff of 80. Maples and Calder entered the Irish market last year when it merged with Binchy's, the first formal merger between an established Irish practice and an international firm.

"Andrew's appointment marks a significant milestone in the firm's development as a premier Irish law firm," said Maples and Calder group managing partner Julian Reddyhough.

"We are committed to establishing Maples and Calder as a leading Irish player in our target areas of banking, capital markets, commercial litigation, corporate and funds."

Maples and Calder is the biggest law firm in the Cayman Islands, where it carries out extensive compliance work. It has a big hedge fund and structured debt practice and claims to act for more hedge funds and fund-issuing vehicles globally than any other legal group. The firm employs 750 people worldwide.

The Dublin office has expanded rapidly since it merged with Binchy's, which previously specialised in international law, corporate finance and information technology. Binchy's had 40 staff at the time of the merger in January 2006.

Maples and Calder recently took up residence in the Shelbourne Developments' building at 75 St Stephen's Green.
