The University of Limerick has been selected from 13 third level institutions worldwide to carry out an electronics research project for Sun Microsystems. The campus research group, PEI Technologies, will receive an initial $100,000 (£69,166) to find ways in which powerful micro-chips can be made to work faster without emitting electromagnetic interference.

Researchers plan to devise an experimental technique which would allow Sun to predict levels of electronic emissions during the early stages of product development. Sun Microsystems, ranked at 203 on the Fortune 500 listing, has recently relocated its European Software Centre to East Point Business Park, Dublin.
