The Dow industrials in New York plunged nearly 200 points yesterday, extending a week-long slide from record highs, as a sudden run of disappointing profit news continued with a discouraging forecast from Boeing.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 195.93 to 8,932.98.

The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 24.32 to 1,139.76, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index lost 34.53 to 1,935.22.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a nearly four-to-one margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 2,392 up, 642 down and 497 unchanged.

NYSE volume totalled 731.38 million shares as of 4 p.m., Vs. 736.50 million in the previous session. The NYSE composite index fell 12.13 to 576.68, and the American Stock Exchange composite index fell 13.31 to 719.72.

The Russell 2000 index of companies lost 8.01 to 442.92.
