McCourt rises from ashes in Limerick

Attempts to improve the image of Limerick city for tourism continue, the Margin notes

Attempts to improve the image of Limerick city for tourism continue, the Margin notes. But new suggestions at this week's launch of Shannon Development's annual report have a touch of irony.

Representations have been made to Shannon Development and Limerick Tourist Board by "interested parties" suggesting the city "capitalise" on the success of Frank McCourt's best-selling novel Angela's Ashes. Suggestions of exhibitions, guided tours and even theme parks have not been ruled out.

Tourist chiefs in the city and local politicians believe there is great potential in attracting US visitors to the city if the associations with McCourt are further publicised internationally.

Ironic really, given that when Mr McCourt lived in the city he was not given a secondary education and was even prevented from becoming an altar boy.
