Irish Sun editor Mick McNiffe is to step down as editor of the paper after seven years to be replaced by an interim team from London after News International carried out a review of the paper, The Irish Times has learned.
Recent circulation figures for the paper showed sales of 72,500 for the period June to January 2012.
A decade ago the paper was selling over 110,000 copies a day and it’s understood News International is planning changes aimed at bringing “more of the DNA that lies at the heart of The Sun into the Irish edition without compromising the paper’s Irish identity”.
To oversee the changes, News International has assigned The Sun assistant editor Paul Hudson as acting editor, while assistant design editor Nathan Brandon will also move from London to Dublin to serve as design director on the Irish Sun.
Staff at the Irish Sun were informed of the changes yesterday and the editor of the Sun, Dominic Mohan, paid tribute to Mr McNiffe for his loyal service to the paper since he took over at the helm of the Irish edition seven years ago.
