RTÉ’s current affairs discussion show The Week in Politics returns this Sunday in its new time slot of midday on RTÉ One, with a late-night repeat occupying what was its traditional bedtime slot.
Broadcasting the show live earlier in the day, when Sunday newspaper headlines are still fresh, makes sense for RTÉ, given the programme was typically recorded in Montrose in early afternoon anyway.
Although Sunday is reliably the slowest of slow news days, recording interviews hours in advance of broadcast meant the various ministerial pronouncements and analysis risked being overtaken by events.
The switch to a live TWIP at noon marks the beginning of a period of change for RTÉ News and Current Affairs, following the appointment of new managing director of news and current affairs, Kevin Bakhurst, last July.
The two-hour weekday morning news programme first announced last autumn will debut on January 28th with Keelin Shanley as the main presenter. It has been given the title Morning Edition.
Finally, the new-look, more mixed-format Prime Time, which will run three times a week and incorporate the rebranded Frontline, is scheduled to begin on February 4th.
