SHOPPERS WILL be able to save money on food and groceries by signing up to a new rewards programme offered by the convenience store Spar. BWG Foods, the owner and operator of Spar in Ireland, is investing €1 million in a dual-pricing rewards scheme, with customers who sign up paying less for certain grocery items.

The My Spar Rewards Club is based on instant rewards, with no minimum age criteria to join: a first in such schemes, according to the retailer.

Shoppers will be able to save as much as 50 per cent on dual-priced products spanning all categories, from deli to fresh foods, in addition to regular promotions and discount offers.

Other benefits at participating stores will include “linked offers” such as getting one coffee free after buying five cups.

“With My Spar Rewards Club there will be no points, no paper and no waiting. Rather than earning points or waiting for paper vouchers every few months, Spar shoppers will be rewarded instantly with cheaper products and offers tailored to their purchasing preferences when they’re actually in the store,” said Malachy Hanberry, the sales and retail advisory services director of BWG Foods.

The My Spar Rewards Club card will double-up as a store debit or savings card meaning customers can top-up in-store or online to eliminate the need for cash, or use it to save for occasions such as Christmas.
